On Wednesday May 31, the Veritas Café will take place at 20:00 in the Trafalgar Pub!
From colonialism and crusades to pacifism and peacemaking, and everything in between – historically, the relationship between Christianity and violence has been messy and complicated.
Jesus’ saying “Love your enemies and bless those who persecute you” has offered a challenge for many people. Does it mean that violence should be categorically denounced? And how does this peaceful message relate to violent passages in the Bible and the death of Jesus on the cross?
Helped by the work of French philosopher René Girard, theologian Daan Savert will discuss these questions and argue that the issue of violence is one of the central concerns of the Christian faith. He will challenge both believers and non-believers to critically reflect on their ideas on (non)violence and peace.
